Brian Jones

He formed the band, named it, and forged the path it still travels. He's also been dead 40 years. Here's a nice little overview of Brian Jones, the often-forgotten Rolling Stone, as the anniversary of his death approaches.

Bonus: "Godstar" - Psychic TV's trippy tribute to Jones.

Bruce Covers Joe

Bruce Springsteen opened his Glastonbury gig tonight with an acoustic cover of Joe Strummer's "Coma Girl". I must hear this. Internet, please deliver.

Daily Dose

I can't believe there's a better daily photoblog on the internet than Sam Javanrouh's Daily Dose of Imagery. This dude's got an eye. Toronto never looked so interesting.

Get lost in the archives.

Fefe Talavera

While listening to The Bug's awesome "London Zoo" album, browsing the liner notes and admiring the packaging, I noticed "Artwork by Fefe Talavera". So, of course I Googled the name and found a very cool Brazilian artist, who's produced some fabulous stuff. Echoes of Picasso, Basquiat and Miro.

Music's always opened doors for me. No exception here.

Damn

Showcase of the world's most impressive dams. These were massive projects.

Bonus - the lyrics to "Hoover Dam", my favorite Bob Mould song.

Standing on the edge
Of the hoover dam
I’m on the centerline
Right between two states of mind
And if the wind from the traffic
Should blow me away

From this altitude
It will come back to you
And do you know the time
All that’s left of me is slight insanity
What’s on the right I don’t know

If the mississippi should wash me away
Down to new orleans
Maybe someday in my dreams
I’d wake feeling the sweat
From the gulf in my mouth

On a carousel I can never tell
My direction home
Spinning down a hole
I’m losing all control
I’m down to the center of the earth

Covered up with lava and I feel fine
It washes over me
Keeps me feeling warm at night
And if you’ve made a deal with
The guy with the horns and the cape
I’ll see you later later

Standing on the edge
Of the hoover dam
Standing on the edge
Of the hoover dam I am

Tape

Auto Tune the News

Who can argue that Auto Tune the News isn't the smartest, most inventive diversion on the internet these days? Brilliant stuff.

Shutter Island

Trailer for "Shutter Island" - Scorsese's next film, coming in October. Looks quite promising.

In a World

Long, but quite interesting New Yorker piece on movie marketing.

You'll definitely watch movie trailers differently after reading this.

REM Fonts

If you needed further proof that the music business is in the midst of a sea change, how about this - REM is selling fonts derived from their album packaging and tour merch. I have no problem with this - if mutliple revenue streams are required to keep a band afloat, so be it.
